During the FunLab summer camps, we experimented with the “Language throught Art” method of helping kids learn English. We had so much fun that I decided to expand the approach to “Language through Crafts”. This easy craft project is a great addition to any winter English curriculum – inexpensive to put together and lots of fun because “Who does not love PENGUINS?????”. We used our Mini Penguins to decorate the FunLab store window during the month of January but they can be turned into a pencil topper with a little bit of glue and given away as party favors.
Ages: 7 to 10 years of age
Word development: winter, snow, wings, eyes, beak, webbed feet, iceberg, cold, paint, paint brush, black, white, orange, habitat, fish, eggs
You will need:
Small Styrofoam balls
Black and white acrylic paint
Long wooden skewers
Google eyes
Black felt
Orange craft foam
Acrylic Gloss
Hot glue
Let’s get started:
Step 1: Stab the wooden skewers into the botton of the small styrofoam balls. Draw the shape of a tummy on the styrofoam ball.
Step 2: Paint the body black and the tummy of the penguin white. Once dry paint with the acrylic glaze.
Step 3: Cut out a beak, two webbed feet and two tear drop shapped wings.
Step 4: Glue on eyes.
Step 5: Glue on beak.
Step 6: Glue on webbed feet.
Step 7: Glue on wings.
The addition of these MINI PENGUINS to our winter store window was a joyful touch during these cold and gray winter months!
Teachers – if you make these penguins send us a picture and we will publish it!
