Starburst Shirt

I have seen posts online which show how to create these colorful STARBURST SHIRTS but never had the time to try it out. This summer while looking for ways to decorate t-shirts during the FunLab Summer Camp I decided to try to insert it into our Language Through Art method of teaching English. This project is great for large groups of kids of mixed ages. Try it out and send us your pictures! Need flashcards? Download our activity specific set of cards

You will need:
White cotton t-shirts
Sharpies (mixed colors)
Alcohol
Cardboard
Paint Brushes

Language Development: Markers, light colors, dark colors, alcohol, paint brush, cardboard, to spread, t-shirt, dots, small, medium, large, to dip

Let’s get started:
Step 1: Insert a piece of cardboard inside the shirt. This is essential so that the back of the t-shirt does not get colored.

Step 2: Draw an image with the Sharpies.

Step 3: Dip the paint brush in the alcohol and press in the middle of the image. Watch your colors spread!

Step 4: EXPERIMENT! Try out different colors and shapes. We found that close together different sized dots gave wonderful results. (As I was working on the example t-shirt my 9 year old wanted to take over and his creations were completely different than mine.)
He carefully added layers of colors and dots.

Look at the final effect!

One great thing about this approach is that the kids can work on the t-shirt over a couple of days and it dries almost immediately!

Take care
Alison
