Five little pumpkins – Halloween Song and Activity for young ESL students

Keeping English classes fun is an essential part of the FunLab Bilingual Phonics approach. This can be major undertaking and needs to be adapted for different age groups. The first seasonal activity which we try to incorporate into our classes is HALLOWEEN! After the success with BOOK CLUB we decided to try it out with smaller children using with a song together with a video rather than a book. This silly song “Five Little Pumpkins Sitting On A Gate” is easy to learn and has hand motions. We matched it with a creative project for the kids to glue into their notebooks. Try it out!

You will need:
Gate template
Paper pumpkins-5 per child (or you can use stickers) but I cut ours out using the SIZZIX die cutter with the Thinlits Halloween set.
Witch hats-one per child (there is a witch hat in the Thinlits Halloween set)
Glue
Brown and green pencils

Song Lyrics – 5 Little Pumpkins and movements:
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate (hold up 5 fingers)
The first one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late! (while saying first hold up one finger and then put your hands on your cheeks)
The second one said, “There are witches in the air” (while saying second hold up two fingers and then point and look up as if looking for the witches)
The third one said, “But we don’t care!” (while saying third hold up three fingers and then wag your pointer finger)
The fourth one said, “We are ready for some fun!” (while saying fourth hold up four fingers and then put your hands in the air)
The fifth one said, “Let’s run and run and run!” (while saying fifth hold up five fingers and then move arms as if running)
So whoo when the wind (make the whooooo sound dramatic)
And out went the lights (clap hands/turn off lights)
And five little pumpkins rolled out of sight (roll hands).

Vocabulary development: gate, brown, pumpkin, orange, witch, hat, black, wind, lights, numbers up to 5

Let’s get started:
Step 1: Have the kids watch the video.
Step 2: Teach the kids the song with the hand movements.
Step 3: Play with the new word flashcards – games which could be fun are bingo and memory.
Step 4: Have the kids do the creative project in their workbooks.
a. glue in the gate image and color the gate brown

b. glue on the five pumpkins

c. glue on the witch hat and have the kids draw the hair and the face of the witch.

I actually glued my witch onto a craft stick so that I could wave it around while singing the song but the kids can glue theirs directly into their workbooks!

SING THE SONG!!!
Have fun
Alison
