Often people ask me for suggestions for easy birthday party craft ideas – little do they know that the idea of 20 six year olds running around with paint brushes in my living room is enough for me to decide to not hold a party:). However, there is one craft project that I used to do at summer camp which fits the bill: the kids have fun creating something and the Mom does not go crazy trying to keep things under control.
I have always called this type of craft triangle weaving but while preparing this post I discovered that its true name is Ojo de Dios with ancient origins in Mexico! All you need are craft sticks and yarn to make this colorful project.
You will need:
Craft sticks
Different colors of yarn
Glue
Let’s get started:
Step 1: Glue two craft sticks in the form of an X.
Step 2: Prepare little bundles of colored yarn by wrapping around pieces of cardboard.
Step 3: Tie the first color around the center of the X.
Step 4: Wrap around the center in a diagonal 6 to 7 times.
Step 5: Wrap around the center in a diagonal 6 to 7 times in the other direction.
Step 6: Wrap around the back of the top stick and across the top of stick to the left.
Step 7: Keep going until you are ready to change colors – tie a little knot with the new color and keep wrapping!
Step 8: When you have reached the edge of the craft sticks tie a little knot on the back of the craft stick. Fix the know with a drop of glue.
Step 9: Tie a knot at the end of the left over yarn so that the weaving project can be hung up and shown off.
Step 10: Trim off any pieces of yarn from the back.
Adding details:
Flip the craft sticks over and keep weaving and you can create fun effects.
