It is not easy making English classes FUN – competing with all the other after school activities can be really tough. Here is one creative idea which will be a guaranteed sucess with your students. I used paper to keep the cost low – if you want you can have the kids draw on eyes instead of google eyes (I recommend the googles eyes because kids love them). We made this in time for Valentine’s day but if you are working on the life cycle of the butterfly this could be an interesting craft to introduce even if it is not in time for Valentine’s Day.
Language development: heart, purple, red, pink, wings, eyes, antenae, mouth, small, butterfly, glue, paper
Let’s get started:
Step 1: Fold a rectangle of purple paper in half. Draw the top part of a heart-this will form your wings.
Step 2: Cut out wings.
Step 3: Glue the wings and then the hearts to form the body of the butterfly. To create a difference between the body and the head we glued 4 hearts pointing downwards and 1 heart pointing upwards as the head.
Step 4: Glue on eyes and draw on mouth and antenae with a black marker.
This project is great because it can be developed on different levels depending on the age group of the children. We used it on children from 4 to 9 years of age. For younger kids, I strongly recommend to have all your material precut before class so that the project will work. Instead with older aged children, you can have them cut out their own wings – this way no two butterflies come out the same. We use flashcards with the words that will be delevoped during the lesson so that the children learn the vocabulary. No time to make flashcards, no problem just print out Valentine Heart Butterfly Flashcards. You can ask them to ask for what they need in English using stater sentences such as: “May I have….” and “Please pass the….”..
Try it out and let us know how it works for you.
