Book Club: The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle

Vibrant images and a straight forward text make “The Very Busy Spider” by Eric Carle a perfect candidate for the FunLab Book Club. This beginner reader book is perfect for first and second grade ESL (English as a second language) kids. For the project, we decided to use craft sticks because what kid does not LOVE craft sticks. We had the kids paint the craft sticks black but if painting is not an option (can get quite messy) you can use colored craft sticks. Try it out with your class and let us know how it goes!

You will need:

Let’s get started: Introduce the vocabulary and play games with the new words so that the kids are comfortable. Read the book – remember to act it out. For more information on how FunLab runs its book clubs read this post!

The craft is really easy – paint three sticks per child black (or use colored craft sticks). Glue sticks together to create the frame for the spider web. Use embroidery thread to create the web by wrapping the sticks. Glue on a small plastic spider. We left a little string so that the kids can hang the spider webs in their rooms!

Have fun
