Birthday party craft: Easy Weaving

Often people ask me for suggestions for easy birthday party craft ideas – little do they know that the idea of 20 six year olds running around with paint brushes in my living room is enough for me to decide to not hold a party:).  However, there is one craft project that I used to do at summer camp which fits the bill:  the kids have fun creating something and the Mom does not go crazy trying to keep things under control.

I have always called this type of craft triangle weaving but while preparing this post I discovered that its true name is Ojo de Dios with ancient origins in Mexico! All you need are craft sticks and yarn to make this colorful project.

Recycling crafts: Panda Bear refrigerator magnet

As announced in a prior post, April 30th FunLab hosted a day camp dedicated to the PANDA BEAR in collaboration with the WWF.  We spent a day using art and crafts as a way to educate our group of kids on exactly who the panda bear is.  The kids were excited to learn all sorts of fun details about the adorable WWF mascot.  One fact in particular seemed to make a big impression on our group.  When we showed them images of destroyed bamboo jungles, they immediately wanted to draw pictures of happy pandas in “protected” FunLab bamboo jungles!

Craft for kids: WWF bear friends

As announced several weeks ago, FunLab has recently started a collaboration with the WWF in their launching of the new Linea Baby.  The Linea Baby transforms a gift to a small child into a donation which goes to support areas dedicated to saving wild and exotic animals. The components of the Linea Baby kit are a small stuffed panda bear, a coloring book, a decal for the car and a certificate.

While brainstorming on how to turn the collaboration between FunLab and the WWF into a meaningful experience for the FunLab gang, I came up with the idea of creating a day camp dedicated to the WWF mascot, the panda bear. Besides being really cute:), the panda is a great example of how donations to the WWF have been turned into a success story of increasing panda habitats and survival.

APRIL 30TH 2012 will be the FunLab PANDA BEAR CAMP. A mix of arts, crafts and a (little bit at least) of the story of the panda and the WWF!

Recycling project for kids: Easter basket

Easter is just around the corner and I needed one last project for the FunLab Easter Camp.  I decided that our sheep, bunnies and ducklings would not be complete without an Easter basket for our gang to take all their craft projects home in.  Furthermore, I wanted to slip in at least one recycling based project into their busy camp schedule…  Come see how I made it.
